The Archbishop of Canterbury caused a real hullabaloo when he appeared to suggest that the adoption of parts of Sharia Law into the UK criminal justice system was inevitable. For a clever man, which Rowan Williams is, it would seem careless in the extreme not to see what the reaction would be to his speech. So what if he wasn’t foolish at all? What if the furore was the real reason behind his ‘conclusions’?

Jack Straw was in a bit of a mess - his civil servants are caught bugging MP’s without his say so nor knowledge. Not only that but he also makes it clear that he thinks that MP’s should retain the right to privacy when dealing with their constituents, just as he announces that the rest of us are about to lose the right to privacy in legal matters. One law for us and another for you eh Jack?

Poor old Gordon, things just haven’t been going his way and he must be wondering how long all this can go on. One thing’s for sure he has to do something to turn things around. The Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama seem more concerned about each other than on the big prize, with the race to be the final Democrat candidate for 2008 Presidential Election turning very personal. Meanwhile the leading Republican must be thinking he’s dreaming as his campaign, which was all but over a few weeks ago now looks like he’ll be the Republican’s man for the job and with the Democrats taking their eye off the ball he steals a march on them.

With the UK economy looking decidely shaky Gordon Brown was off to Davos and a meeting with his former political nemesis, who was joint chair of the 2008 World Economic Forum (WEF). Let’s hope the ‘ice’ isn’t too thin.
